Walid Khamis was awarded the Sultans Gallantry Medal for his participation in the battle and the citation for that award is shown below.

“During the enemy attack on Mirbat on the 19th July 1972 he was a member of the 25 pounder gun detachment. Throughout the action he displayed the greatest courage in that he, with other members of the detachment, kept the gunfire at point blank range despite the most intense and accurate small arms fire until he himself was severely wounded. He also displayed calmness despite his injuries and the intensity of the battle around him. His efforts were instrumental in preventing the enemy from capturing the gun”
